Spotted testing just ahead of its official launch later this month, the petrol variant of the much-awaited Tata Harrier has been caught on cam for the very first time. The new spy shots preview the SUV in its stealthy Dark Edition avatar, indicating that the new petrol power unit – which is capable of being offered with multiple recipes like the current diesel lineup – could be offered in more than just one trim. The Harrier in its petrol avatar – this will be the first time Tata Motors has a petrol powertrain for the Harrier since the SUV’s first launch back in 2019 – is part of a major upgrade strategy for the lineup. Apart from the Harrier, Tata is also working on a petrol version of the Safari, thereby covering both the two-row and three-row SUV segments.
The new Harrier petrol is powered by the in-house developed, 1.5-litre GDi Hyperion turbo-petrol engine, which was first seen on its way to the upcoming Sierra. The engine here is good for 158 bhp and 255 Nm of peak torque, and is likely to deliver plenty of grunt as well as smooth driving characteristics. Just like the setup that was revealed with the Sierra, buyers will likely be given a choice between a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic. It will also offer a range of drive modes for added versatility to change on the fly depending on road conditions (or just driving mood).

By launching a petrol variant of Harrier, Tata could target stronger against ward-yielding petrol options such as the MG Hector and Hector Plus, Mahindra XUV700, Hyundai Alcazar and soon-rival Kia Carens Clavis. Depending on the variant, market estimates expect the price difference between the two diesel and petrol models to be approximately ₹1.5–2 lakh.
With Harrier petrol, we expect the appeal of Tata’s flagship SUV to expand massively as it gives the customers an affordable and more versatile choice.
